The 4x Fittest Man on Earth Pursues Greatness in Physical Activity and Addiction Recovery

If you are a fan of Surfside, you know how passionate we are about physical health.  Whether our residents are hiking in Tennessee or surfing along the Ventnor Pier, Surfside prioritizes keeping our guys moving during the early recovery process. Since Surfside’s inception, we have observed a positive correlation between physical activity and addiction recovery.

Let’s be clear.  Is every Surfside resident a great athlete? Absolutely not. Do we expect them to turn into great athletes? Not even close.

On the contrary, we expose our men to challenging, physical exertion to supplement the mental and spiritual growth in early recovery.  In our mind, it is not enough to just talk about growth, but to actually put the work in to grow.  We get out of our comfort zone, and little by little, achieve what we thought was impossible.  And not to mention, physical activity in addiction recovery can be a lot of fun.

Don’t believe us? What if the 4x Fittest Man on Earth is on the same page?

Well, it turns out that he is.  Mat Fraser, the 4-time and defending CrossFit Games Champion, is a walking, jacked embodiment of Surfside’s mission that physical activity and addiction recovery can transform a young man’s life.  In his new interview, Pursuit for Better, Mat reflects on his own struggle with addiction, and how he uses CrossFit to improve all areas of his life.

If you have the time, we highly recommend you check out Mat’s interview.

Physical Activity and Addiction is More Than Just Lifting Weights

Needless to say, Mat is a physical freak-of-nature.  We are not saying that you have to become a physical freak or the fittest man on earth in order to find success in recovery.

However, we are pretty sure that isn’t Mat’s point.

For Mat, and our residents at Surfside, physical activity and CrossFit are a vehicle for growth and setting goals in life.  It doesn’t matter what that goal is.  All that matters is you continue to run, walk, or crawl towards it.

In Mat’s words: Most people have no idea how powerful they are.

Our guys might not be pros, but they don’t shy away from a challenge. Enjoy a clip of our guys getting after it at Crossfit OTG.

If you or a loved one are struggling, please do not hesitate to reach out.  Our Executive Director is ready to help point you in the direction of treatment services.
