Do you find yourself struggling to get through the day? We aren’t talking about sobriety, but just every day life stuff?  Are your previous morning tips just not cutting it anymore?

Surely you have seen the “Make Your Bed” speech by Admiral William H. McRaven.  This video has gone viral since the Admiral made the speech in 2014 at the University of Texas Commencement.  The Admiral tells the story of his SEAL instructors and their philosophy on making your bed in the morning.

In one of our earliest Podcasts here, Ian and Brian gave a few tips they use to start their day off properly.

Check out some morning tips courtesy of one of our staff members!

Morning Tips To Start Your Day

  1. Take Some Quiet Time

It is important to take a few moments to acclimate yourself to the world around you.  If you are a coffee drinker, enjoy your first cup in complete silence.  Pull out your daily reflection book, pray, or even meditate for a few moments.  Nothing too fancy or structured.  The importance lies in your ability to quiet your mind and become aware of your presence in the world.

       2. Put Down The Phone

Take a page out of our Executive Director’s Playbook. Ian forces himself to live for ten minutes prior to looking at his phone or computer.   Once that phone turns on, we know it is very hard to put it down throughout the day.  Instagram and Facebook can wait!  Take a moment to observe something real- like the sunrise, the beach, or your dog!

       3. Set Your Goals For The Day

It’s not important HOW you organize your day… it’s only important that you make an effort to do so.  Many of our staff at Surfside use a spiral notepad so they are forced to take a few minutes and physically write down their goals.  Try to diversify your goals- what needs to get done for work, how I can I progress personally, how can I spend more time with my family, etc. At the end of the day, review your goals to see where you can improve and start your next day’s goals as well.

   4.  Practice Gratitude

We’ve all been there… the alarm goes off and we can’t believe we have to start ANOTHER day.  Instead of thinking about what you HAVE to do, think about what you GET to do.  There are millions of people around the world that would sell their soul to live one day in your shoes.  You are alive today.  Be grateful for what you have and enjoy it!
